Can't help with the weight loss. Need those tips also. When I quit smoking, it just really stunk. I told everyone that I was quitting which made me feel I need to stay quit that much more. I just realized that this was it. I couldn't turn back. It took almost a year before it felt ok. Not so much the cravings but learning to deal with stress in a new way. Jill

My tip for weight loss is to not diet. Instead, make changes you can live with for life. For instance, cut back on sweets and fried foods (eliminate them if you can). Eat more veggies. Adjust how you prepare your meals, grilling and broiling instead of frying. Keep your portions in check and watch snacking between meals.

Weight loss for me is totally portion control. When I do "diet" I eat less and try to fill up on fruits and vegetables. Drink water and don't look at the scale. To me, healthy weight is much more than that number on the scale.
ReplyDeletehiwendyhi at yahoo dot com
I think the only real way to lose much weight is exercise. Eating smaller portions helps too. But you can't go through your whole life on a diet and depriving yourself of every food that you enjoy, because then you're still miserable---just in a different way.

My weight loss tips: Drink a glass of water when you're feeling hungry and wait 15 minutes after that to eat. I also keep a container of low-fat, low-cal snacks on hand and allow myself 1 when I'm feeling the need to cheat...granola bars, fruit snacks and 1 low fat cookie in a ziploc bag are some of the snacks I keep for me.
ReplyDeleteI think the biggest tip for quitting smoking is you have to have your mind made up. Oh and Rx Chantix (med) is great!
ReplyDeleteFor quitting smoking, the person who is doing the quitting must be ready to stop. Badgering the person to finally stop smoking cigarettes won't get you anywhere. If they don't want to quit, it's not going to work.

ReplyDeletertrexel@gmail.com
Well, you have to make permanent changes so start small in all areas. Make your portions smaller - if you want chips, pour out a few on a plate/napkin and put away the bag. Eat healthier foods - incorporate whole grains and vegetables and ensure that every meal has protein so that you don't go hungry by just eating lettuce leaves. Give up sugared drinks altogether - sodas have so much sodium in them that even the diet versions work against you. Make iced tea and drink it unsweetened. Drink overly sweet drinks (like juices from concentrate) in very small amounts. Make your morning cup with one less spoon of sugar and use milk instead of cream. Small efforts that can easily change your tastes and habits.
ReplyDeleteAlso, make moving a part of your day. If you work outside the home, walk fast from car to office and take the stairs when possible. Work at home, dance and sing while vacuuming or do lunges while brushing teeth. Just always move.
My tip for weight loss would be to start slow with realistic goals and milestones, and to gradually replace your bad food choices with better ones, so that eventually it becomes a natural part of your daily lifestyle -- and, if possible, to avoid eating out at all costs!

My tip for quitting smoking... think of how much a pack of cigarettes are times how many packs you smoke per day plus how many you buy in a month. Total that up and think of how much money you save . You could also put the amount of money per day that you would spend on a pack in a jar and see how much you would have at the end of the month. I did and I have been smoke free for 8 years now. Best thing I ever did! Good Luck!

The only thing that works for me with weight loss is keeping myself accountable for the calories and sticking within my daily limit. I don't force myself to eat things I don't like (and that usually taste like cardboard) so I try to make my allotted calories count and be nutritious (1200 per day for me.)
ReplyDeleteFor smoking I tried a few times over the years and the only thing that finally worked was just getting so disgusted with it that I said "that's IT!" and it was. That was 8 years ago this month. :-)

I quit smoking almost a year and a half ago, still want one every time I stop to think about it. I had to quit simply because I couldn't afford to smoke them any more. Dieting with friends is great - pick strong friends who will keep you on track though.
ReplyDeleteWhen dieting I drink water. If I have sweet diet drinks, they seem to entice me into wanting more food. So I'm less tempted with water, and it also saves me money!
Don't fixate on it. I find that if I stress about a diet and worry about every little thing, then I am miserable. Make small changes over time.

ReplyDeleteI have lost 35 pounds in a little more than a year. I have tried so many times before and ended up gaining weight instead of losing it. Now I buy fresh fruit and slice it up so it looks like more. I then put the pieces in baggies and put them in the fridge. It really helps when I want something sweet. I also have found my triggers which makes me want something I should have and avoid them like caffeine, soda and even some juices.

For weight loss my suggestion is to change one thing at a time. When I tried to reduce portions size and limit carbs and sugars all at the same time I just felt overwhelmed. The same applies to exercise. I was so out of shape that I had to start very slowly and work up to something that would actually burn calories.
